Day 3: The Unwinnable War

A happy, cheerful face
That she tries to hide behind,
Concealing always downcast eyes
And her ever-broken smile.
Tears that threaten to overflow
When others are around
Refuse to fall and stay inside
When she finally is alone.
She's always heard "Life isn't fair".
She didn't know it would be this hard.
When all else fails and she wants to scream,
She wraps herself in a novel's arms.
Friends that try to make her laugh,
They just don't understand.
Every word they say to her
Is another invisible blade against her hand.
At the end of the day
As she falls asleep
Her music still plays on,
Harmonizing battle cries
Against a war she hasn't won.
